A short proof of non-GF(5)-representability of matroids

چکیده
Tutte proved that a matroid is binary if and only if it does not contain a U2;4-minor. This provides a short proof for non-GF(2)-representability in that we can verify that a given minor is isomorphic to U2;4 in just a few rank evaluations. Using excluded-minor characterizations, short proofs can also be given of non-representablity over GF(3) and over GF(4). For GF(5), it is not even known whether the set of excluded minors is finite. Nevertheless, we show here that if a matroid is not representable over GF(5), then this can be verified by a short proof. Here a ‘‘short proof’’ is a proof whose length is bounded by some polynomial in the number of elements of the matroid. In contrast to these positive results, Seymour showed that we require exponentially many rank evaluations to prove GF(2)-representability, and this is in fact the

Matroids Representable Over Fields With a Common Subfield
A matroid is GF(q)-regular if it is representable over all proper superfields of the field GF(q). We show that, for highly connected matroids having a large projective geometry over GF(q) as a minor, the property of GF(q)-regularity is equivalent to representability over both GF(q) and GF(q) for some odd integer t ≥ 3. We do this by means of an exact structural description of
متن کاملCertifying non-representability of matroids over prime fields
It is proved that, for a prime number p, showing that an n-element matroid is not representable over GF (p) requires only O(n) rank evaluations.
متن کاملConfinement of matroid representations to subsets of partial fields
Let M be a matroid representable over a (partial) field P and B a matrix representable over a sub-partial field P′ ⊆ P. We say that B confines M to P′ if, whenever a P-representation matrix A of M has a submatrix B, A is a scaled P′-matrix. We show that, under some conditions on the partial fields, on M , and on B, verifying whether B confines M to P′ amounts to a finite check. A corollary of t...
متن کاملk-Regular Matroids
The class of matroids representable over all fields is the class of regular matroids. The class of matroids representable over all fields except perhaps GF (2) is the class of near-regular matroids. Let k be a non-negative integer. This thesis considers the class of k–regular matroids, a generalization of the last two classes. Indeed, the classes of regular and near-regular matroids coincide wi...
متن کاملThe Excluded Minors for GF(4)-Representable Matroids
The definitions of these matroids, with a summary of their interesting properties, can be found in the Appendix. Except for P"8 , they were all known to be excluded minors for GF(4)-representability (see Oxley [15, 17]). The matroid P"8 is obtained by relaxing the unique pair of disjoint circuit-hyperplanes of P8 . Ever since Whitney's introductory paper [28] on matroid theory, researchers have...
